Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּחַל I. i.q. בָּעַל No. 3; followed by בְּ, to loathe; compare Syr. ܒܚܺܥܳ nauseating, suffering from nausea. Zechariah 11:8, נַפְשָׁם בָּֽחֲלָה בִי “their soul loathed me.” This signification is either taken from the cognate בָּעַל בְּ, or from בָּחַן and בָּתַר בְּ, but with the sense of rejecting.

II. i.q. Arab. جخل to be greedy, avaricious. Hence Pual, Proverbs 20:21, in כתיב, נַתֲלָה מְבֹחֶלֶת “a possession obtained by avarice;” see Schult. Animadvv. ad h. l. The ancient versions express the מבהלת קרי in translating.
