Vocabulary of the Greek NT

Field (Notes, p. 88) points out that the preposition must not be pressed, as in John 4:15 RV; all that it implies is merely that a certain distance is to be traversed, whether long or short, cf. Luke 2:15, Acts 9:32. But this does not involve ignoring the difference between the compound and the AV simplex : the RV exaggeration is slight, and very effective. Ramsay Exp V. i. p. 385 ff. argues that δ. in Ac implies missionary travel. The verb is very common in connexion with past time, e.g. Rev L 18.10 (iii/B.C.) IX. 1198.12 (A.D. 150) τῶι διελθόντι δωδεκάτῳ ἔτι, ib. III. 475.16 (A.D. 182) ὀψ [ ]ας τῆς διελθούσ [ης, etc.
